Healthy diet for a healthy skin

You must have heard an old proverb, “You are what you eat”. Anything you put in to your mouth has a direct effect on your body. So a healthy diet is an important factor for everyone’s well being. A lot of research has been done on the benefits of healthy eating. All these researchers have pointed to the need of healthy diet. So what does healthy diet mean? It is a diet loaded with lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, proteins and other essential nutrients. Once you have the right diet your body will feel relaxed and this will appear on your skin.

What to avoid

Certain researchers have shown that certain foods are not good for skin. Avoid white carbohydrate foods such as pasta, rice, white bread, potatoes and sweets. They could initiate a series of reaction in our skin which could lead to the outbreak of pimples and acne. Instead have whole grain bread, brown rice and wheat pasta which are good for skin. Also avoid spicy foods and milk. The androgen found in the milk may get added to the androgen level in our body which may lead to pimple outbreaks. Also reduce the consumption of wine. This could make the skin look dry and worn out.

What to eat

We must take great care while choosing the food. Instead of eating any food rather try to eat food good for skin. Let’s check some of the food and their importance in skin care.

Almonds and sunflower seeds: These are rich in vitamin E that wipes out the destructive free radicals. Also it will guard the skin from harmful UV rays. It also keeps the skin hydrated, which means a glowing skin

Salmon, mackerel and other fatty fish: Skin inflammation may produce free radicals which may contribute to the aging of skin. These foods which are rich in omega 3 fatty acids fight against the inflammation of the body and prevent it from aging.

Carrots, Tomatoes and green leafy vegetables: These foods are rich in beta carotenes. These are converted to vitamin A which regulates skin cell production and thus maintains the smoothness of the skin.

Water: Also adequate intake of fluid is necessary to retain the natural moisture level of the skin; otherwise our skin may look dry and parched. So drink at least 8 cups of water per day to stay refreshed.
