Eczema

Eczema is a long-term chronic skin disease, characterized by red, itchy, bumpy and rashes. There may be some weeping from blistered patches- and where blisters have burst there will be areas of raw skin. Because the skin tends to be itchy, it may get scratched and become infected. It is mainly seen in infants, though it can affect people of all age. The main cause of eczema is still unknown. It can be triggered by some allergic or irritating substances or due to some diseases. Also, genes play an important role in this disease. In some cases environmental changes, may also be the reason for eczema. Eczema is not contagious. Yet it can be disturbing, if it appears in visible regions.

Types of eczema

Atopic dermatitis – It is the most common type of eczema. It mainly affects the face, neck, scalp, elbows, knees and feet. Often this type of eczema passes through many generations. It is found that people with a family history of asthma or hay fever have the chance of having this type of eczema.

Contact dermatitis– It is one of the most common occupational diseases. It is caused by contact with allergic or irritant substances. This type of rash appears only in the area of contact. It causes itching and reddening in areas where the skin has come into contact with an irritating substance. The only way to get rid of such eczema is to avoid contact with allergy causing substances.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis- It mainly affects the scalp, eyebrows and face. The skin may appear dry, oily and flaky. In newborns, it may cause scalp rash called cradle cap. However this type of eczema is curable.

Xerotic eczema- This type of eczema mainly occurs in dry winter seasons. It mainly affects limbs and is commonly seen in older people.

Eczema is commonly diagnosed by doing a biopsy of the skin. In some cases a patch test is also done to identify the triggers of this disease. The doctors may then decide the treatment based on the total evaluation of the patients’ health history. However, these types of treatments may be costly and time consuming. So it would be better to try herbal treatments, which would be much more effective and cost efficient.
